The reason we did not remove it immediately
As spotted through PC Gamer, some former Blizzard and Blizzard North employees held a panel during last weekend's Portland Retro Gaming Expo. During that panel, the group of former Blizz developers talked about the background of Diablo IV Gold and their personal connections to the games. They also shared experiences of creating the popular series. On the panel, an ex-designer who was the lead on Diablo 3, Jay Wilson spoke about the controversial auction house, explaining its history, and much more.
"When I was at Blizzard," said Wilson, "the reason for doing the real-money auction house was to ensure security. The reason was not money. We didn't imagine that we'd earn any money off it. The most difficult thing in Diablo 2 was item duping and duping hacks and all those gold dealers, all those things."
As Wilson explained, Blizzard's plan to avoid this problem with Diablo 3 was to take charge of the trading market. This is also the main reason behind Diablo 3's move to require an always-on internet connection. Wilson affirms that the moment you provide an offline client the hackers "got the game." So always available and the auction house were Blizzard's failed attempts to manage the issues from Diablo 2.
But pretty quickly after its release in 2012 Diablo 3's auction house was recognized as one its biggest flaws getting a constant mocking and criticism by the public. But removing it wasn't simple and wasn't due to technical problems. The reason for its sluggish removal in 2014 was due the auction house was promised as a part of the game printed on all of its retail boxes and there were legal concerns with cutting it.
"The reason we did not remove it immediately when we realized it was a problem was legally we didn't think we could since it was mentioned on the packaging," said Wilson. "So we actually spent a lot of time trying to sort out all the legal issues until we finally said 'OK, we think it's worthwhile to buy Diablo 4 Gold try it and if we do end up getting one, but oh well.'"
